Out of all the questions I get asked about fitness from women, the one that sticks out most in my mind is, “how do I improve my butt?”

As funny as this may sound to guys, it’s actually a very important question for women. There are very few women in the world who don’t want to improve some part of their figure, and of that number, the majority of them want to improve their stomachs and their butts.

Truth is, getting great glutes isn’t hard (really, it isn’t). The hard part is deciphering all the useless information that’s out there about glute training and distinguishing what works from what doesn’t. But thankfully, this article will help you start going in the right direction so you’ll be able to understand what works best.

To start, you’ve got to understand that the glutes are a very important muscle group. Most of the
motions of the human body originate from the core of the body, and the area that provides strength and stability for that area are the hips and the glutes.

A lot of people don’t understand, the glutes are one of the largest muscle groups in the body. If
there’s a movement that involves any type of hip movement, I can guarantee you that the glutes are involved. They’re involved when you squat down to pick up a pencil, when you walk, when you jump, even when you sit down in a chair and get up again.
The machines in the gyms (adductors, abductors, and the butt blaster) work the muscles to a point, but are just a small piece of the puzzle when it comes to making your glutes truly outstanding.

If you remember anything from this article, remember this - to work the glutes effectively, you must involve the hips. And the easiest way to get the hips involved in any exercise is to perform some type of squatting motion.

Squatting helps firms and round the muscles of the glutes. With this firming comes the illusion of a
“lifting” effect that makes the muscles more round and shapely. So to put it bluntly, if you want great glutes, you’ve got to squat - period.

When it comes to squatting, particular for the glutes, ensure sure you involve the muscles to their
fullest extent. Remember that these are some tough, thick, dense muscles and you’re going to have to hit them where it counts to get the results you’re after.

In terms of squatting, many experts will tell you to go low enough so that the top of your thighs are parallel with the floor. I disagree. Your muscles are designed to move and flex through a full range of motion so to get the most from the exercise, I suggest going through the full range of motion of which your body is capable of. For some, that means going past parallel. If that’s the case, do it but make sure you’re able to do it with good form. That means no rounding of the back and definitely no injury-causing movements. If it causes pain to your knees or any part of your body, stop immediately. You want to squat to improve your body, not injure it.

There are many ways you can perform squats that will give you incredible results. Here are a few
variations:

  • Squats with no weight (bodyweight only)
  • Squats with dumbbells
  • One-legged squats (advanced move)
  • Regular lunges (squats with one foot in front of the other - about double shoulder
    width)
  • Lunges with one foot elevated
  • Squats with one foot elevated
  • Walking lunges
  • Squat Jumps

Again, your glutes are tough muscles that need and require a lot of work. Nothing works these muscles as well as squats well. The muscles of the glutes are so thick and dense, it’ll take more work than usually to truly kick them into shape. Try some of the variations above and choose the best for you that you can work on consistently.

Getting great glutes is a goal many women want to achieve. It takes work definitely, but the work pay off in the end (no pun intended).

Train smart and safe and your glutes will be top notch in no time.
