Many people in the gym never take themselves out of their comfort zone when it comes to build leg muscle, sticking to the old favourites the leg press, leg extension and leg curl machines. Although these exercises can be used in a successful program often the most effective leg exercises are not being used well if at all.

So in the interest of variety today I’m going to give you my top exercises to build leg muscle. These are serious exercises and you can do some damage if you do these incorrectly so if your not sure how to do them ask a trainer for some instruction and start light until your body is prepared to take the loads needed to build leg muscle effectively.

Before I get into the exercises I just wanted make a point about balancing your leg program. It is very important when you build leg muscle as with every other muscle group that you keep your muscles in balance. For you legs this means striking a balance between using exercises that use mostly your quadriceps and ones that use mostly the movers of your hip, mainly the glutes and hamstrings.

I’m going to give you two exercises in this article both of them are compound exercises meaning they use two or more joints, but the first is a quad dominant leg muscle exercise and the second is a hip dominant for you to use in your program to build leg muscle.

The Squat

Seriously if you are not squatting you are wasting your time training your legs. Squats and squat variations get a huge amount of effort from your leg muscles and they need to be in your program to build leg muscle.

Probably the most performed type of squat would be the back squat where the bar rests on the very top of your back just below your neck. This squat not only recruits your legs but also requires your abs and core to be in top condition, this is why you should take things slowly as back pain can occur if you cant keep you back in alignment through the exercise using your core and abdominal muscles.

The Deadlift

One of my favourite exercises the deadlift is a valuable addition to any program to build leg muscle. It is a hip dominant exercise so helps to balance out the effect of the quad dominant exercises like the squat.

The Romanian Deadlift variation, done with slightly bent knees is a highly effective exercise for the hamstrings and glutes and when done correctly will also get your abs firing.

Big exercises like the squat and deadlift should form the base for any successful program to build leg muscle. Not only do they have a great effect on the muscles of the leg they also help get the muscle building hormones circulating and save time by working many of the leg muscles at once.
