Many people do not know how widespread adult acne is in today’s world. Some don’t even know the existence of adult acne. Many thought their nightmare with acne ends the moment they leave their high school. How wrong they are! Adult acne is so common in today’s world that up to 50% of the female adults and nearly 25% of the male adults are affected by it. Imagine the statistics and you will definitely be amazed why there are still so many grown adults who do not know the existence of adult acne. Perhaps this group of people needs to be taught a lesson by having a few zits grow across the center of their face.
Let’s spare a thought of them. Since many people are confused with difference between teen and adult acne. I shall talk further about the three differences between teen and adult acne.
1) Adult acne is harder to treat than teen acne!
This is perhaps the most important difference between teen and adult acne which any acne sufferers need to know. Teen acne is basically caused by the occurrence of puberty in ones body. It causes hormonal imbalance which as a result causes oily skin. It would eventually cause acne. Most importantly, normal teen acne sufferer has oily skin.
Adult acne sufferers however, come with both oily and dry skin types. The difference skin types have different treatments. Many OTC (over-the-counter) products cater to those with oily skin type. Many or nearly all OTC products have the side effects of drying up your skin and causing your skin become red. This is because many of the useful and commonly used acne products ingredients include topical products, such as the most frequently seen, benzoyl peroxide.
Hence, many acne sufferers with dry skin have a hard time finding suitable acne treatment products. For this group of people, a moisturizer can be used occasionally to moist up the skin and reduce the dryness. Luckily, there are many treatments out there that do not require us to apply lotion on your acne spot. If you are one with dry skin, NEVER overlook the effect of dry skin! Simply because if you have skin redness or swelling, it could cause a further irritation on your skin and it further worsen your acne condition.
2) Adult acne sufferers are more prone to severe acne
Reports have shown that adult acne sufferers are more prone to severe acne than teen acne sufferers. And among the two sexes, the males tend to have a higher rate of having severe acne as compared to the females, who generally have a higher chance of having adult acne.
One reason why adult acne sufferers are more prone to severe acne problems could be because many adult acne sufferers tend to treat adult acne lightly. Some might that it would be a come-and-go thing and for some, like I said earlier, don’t even know anything about adult acne. Besides, teen acne sufferers are normally exposed to a higher social pressure. This could be partly due to puberty. Hence, they would be more anxious to have their acne treated .If you’re an adult acne sufferer reading this, arm yourself with adequate knowledge before you try to treat adult acne. Acne; or rather Adult Acne is never a come-and-go thing. If you do not take action, adult acne will take action. Sitting back and relax will only mean that your days of severe acne are counting by. Don’t let the word “lazy” ruin your golden years.
3) Main causes of teen acne and adult acne are different
There is much debate on the differences in the causes of teen acne and adult acne. You’d probably be confused to listen to either side of the story. Our advice to you is that, you should believe in those stories that are very much common sense, rather than believing those stories that are always backed up by “reports”. We’re not trying to say that reports are not reliable. What we’re trying to say is that because every individual body is different and what works for others might not work for you.
Causes of teen acne do not need much explanation because everybody knows the causes of it. They are mainly due to puberty, which would cause hormonal imbalance. For adult acne, there are also factors which will cause hormonal imbalance; they include the monthly menstruation of female experience (probably the main reason why adult females have a higher composition of having adult acne) and pregnancy. In fact, there are many females who experience problems with acne shortly after their pregnancy (a kind of report). One cannot deny the fact that the differences in adult female and adult male are the root of the problem for the more frequent hormonal imbalance in between the two sexes.
Another often debated cause of adult acne is stress. Many dermatologists have linked the stress environment in an adult life as one of the causes for adult acne. This is not as commonly seen in teen acne sufferers. The huge intense stress an adult have would cause hormonal imbalance. I would stand to the side to agree that stress is the difference and would be one of the underlying reasons that cause adult acne. There are many causes of acne that can be linked indirectly to stress. For example, when one is stressed up or working late at nights, they tend to drink coffee. Coffee contains caffeine which will increase one’s stress hormones. Another example could be when one is stress up with work, they tend to neglected their diet and health. By neglecting their diet and health, wouldn’t it be another factor which would cause acne?
Basically all these are things you should know about the difference between teen and adult acne. Treatment for adult acne should start early and precaution for adult acne should not be neglected. Find the right solution for your adult acne. Be smart when it comes to choosing your adult acne treatment product. Products that cause skin dryness and redness you have used during your teenage years won’t work for you again. If you have any comments, please share below.
